Clinton’s going to win! No, wait, Trump’s going to win! The rollercoaster ride of the world’s longest election cycle continues. Depending on who you want to win this thing, you can bite your nails to the nub, tremble in fear of The End of All Things Good and Decent, or, like me, turn the TV news off until it’s over.

Researchers finally absolved the mythical “Patient Zero” we’d been told dropped the bomb of AIDS on an unsuspecting America. Like a catchy serial killer nom de plume, the name made for breathless PR and sold more Randy Shilts books, but flight attendant Gaëtan Dugas was innocent.

Donald Trump appeared to throw the election to Hillary Clinton in the third presidential debate, creating an instant internet meme by calling her a “nasty woman” and then, to the sight of jaws dropping across the world,  refusing to say he would accept the election results. In the subsequent days he appeared to be sullen, stunned, and contemplating defeat.

On Friday, hackers gummed up Twitter, Netflix and other quality-of-life sites Americans depend on, apparently in a fit over the criminal and accused rapist Julian Assange having his internet turned off by the Ecuadoran embassy.
